Where once the Romanisches Café had stood as a meeting place for the literary world, after the war, as a local newspaper put it, the "eyesore on Berlin's business card" spread. "I too passed it by often enough," Karl Heinz Pepper recalled - "I was annoyed like all Berliners. So in 1961 he finally decided to take remedial action, and he actually succeeded in convincing the individual property owners and a number of investors of his plan.
