The Romanesque Café, a legendary meeting place for Berlin's cultural elite in the 1920s, is coming back to life at the Europa Center from 6 January 2024. In an impressive 130 square metre pop-up exhibition, visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the "New West Berlin" of the time and experience the stories surrounding the Gedächtniskirche. The exhibition [...]

The exhibition is not only a tribute to the famous Romanesque Café, but also a place of learning and remembrance that explores themes such as freedom and democracy. Visitors from all over the world can find easy access to the formative themes of the Weimar Republic here. A special highlight is the digital reconstruction of the Romanesque Café in 3D, which offers an immersive experience using state-of-the-art virtual reality technologies.

This project aims to preserve the cultural significance of the "New West Berlin" in the Weimar Republic. After the presentation in the Europa Centre, it is planned to show the mobile exhibition in various locations in order to reach a wide audience.

The exhibition provides an insight into the life, work and flirtations of the guests of the Romanisches Café. Visitors can immerse themselves in the chronicles of this mythical place and experience the atmosphere of 1920s Berlin at first hand.

Other attractions include a Charleston dance class video, a faithfully recreated café setting and a large map of Berlin with historical images. The whole thing is complemented by a supporting programme with special events, readings and interactive activities.

The Romanesque Café was once a place of exchange for famous personalities such as Bertolt Brecht, Else Lasker-Schüler, Billy Wilder and many others. The exhibition also sheds light on the tragic fate of many guests after the National Socialists seized power in 1933.

The Romanesque Café remains an important part of Berlin's culture of remembrance to this day. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore this bygone era and become part of history. Admission is free, so don't miss the opportunity to experience this cultural heritage.
